Last night I went to the Charleston Comedy Festival and saw headliner Nate Bargatze.  Check out the video of him (above).  He was even funnier last night and had the crowd rolling.  As a Southern (Nate is from Tennessee) he was extremely relatable.

The Village Theater - Alesya Bags

The first act on stage was The Village Theater – four smart and funny dudes making up a very entertaining improv troupe.  (Two of the member above are pretending to ride in a chariot.)  The crown was thrilled when they not only opened the night but also appeared between the second act and Nate Bargatze.  The other two gentlemen in the group are pictured below.  If you see any of them this weekend, make sure to ask for their Micky Mouse impersonation.

The second group of the night was the Shock T’s – a trio (pictured below) who lend their considerable musical talents to the world of comedy.  My favorite song of the night had to be their redition of Aqua’s Barbie Girl, which sadly, I recongized with the first line.  Head over to their site to hear some of their original songs to get your weekend off to a funny (good funny, not weird funny) start.

Clementines - Alesya Bags

During the colder winter months, I just love seeing a happy box of clementines sitting on the counter.  After I found a recipe from Real Simple combining them with brandy and sugar it made me even happier!

Peeling Clementines - Alesya Bags

Boozy Clementines with Pound Cake

Ingredients (I cut the recipes by two-thirds because I was only serving four people.)

  • 24 clementines
  • 4 1/2 cups brandy
  • 2 1/4 cups honey
  • 4 1/2 cups water
  • 3 store-bought pound cakes, thickly sliced

Clementines in Brandy - Alesya Bags

Directions

1. Using a knife, remove the peels and pith from the clementines.

2. In a large pan, bring the brandy, honey, and 4 1/2 cups water to a boil. Add the clementines, reduce heat, and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat; let cool. Transfer to a serving bowl. Cover and refrigerate for at least 3 1/2 hours and up to 3 days

3. Serve at room temperature with 3 thickly sliced store-bought pound cakes.

Fair WARNING:  This IS a boozy drink.  It tastes like it, smells like it, looks like it.  If  you don’t like alcohol you won’t like this!

That being said, its a great party dessert.  Make it ahead of time and it could be the start of a beautiful evening.
